PETITION
The ACHIMOTA FOREST RESERVE is a NATIONAL ASSET meant to provide invaluable health, and preserve our natural eco-system, yet it has been subject to excessive degradation and encroachment. In recent news, the Ghana government has passed an Executive Instrument to “de-gazette” the area in an attempt to de-classify portions of the Achimota forest as no longer a forest reserve.
In the face of warming temperatures, increasing urban pollution and concrete jungles with its attendant negative impact on our wellbeing, keeping our green spaces and forests intact has become even more critical. LOSS OF GREEN SPACES which serve as sponges to counteract excessive surface run-off has led to adverse environmental impact including the recent heavy floods in Accra.
Government’s targetting of critical green SPACES, ecological hotspots, and important Green Spaces like the Efua Sutherland Childrens Park, Atewa Forest, Parks and Gardens, Dodowa Forest area, and the Achimota Forest Reserve, poses SERIOUS WELL-BEING AND RESILIENCE RISK for all Ghanaians.
We call on PRESIDENT NANA AKUFFO-ADDO, head of the government of Ghana, to take pro-active restorative, focused actions to PROTECT THE ACHIMOTA FOREST RESERVE IN ITS ENTIRETY BY DECLARING EXECUTIVE INSTRUMENT 144 NULL AND VOID.
