The Ghana Civil-society Cocoa Platform is advocating for a 65-70% increase in the farm-gate price of cocoa for the 2024/2025 season. In a recent press conference in Accra, the platform, which includes cocoa farmers’ associations and various civil society organizations, highlighted the urgent challenges plaguing the cocoa sector. Issues such as climate change, smuggling, illegal mining, and declining yields were at the forefront of the discussion, with GCCP urging the government to take immediate action to address these critical concerns.
Despite a significant rise in international cocoa prices, Ghanaian farmers have yet to see these gains reflected in their earnings. GCCP emphasized that fair compensation is essential to improving the living standards of these farmers, who are the backbone of the country’s economy. The call for a substantial increase in farm-gate prices is not just about economic fairness; it’s about ensuring the sustainability and future prosperity of Ghana’s cocoa sector.
